2009-06-16 -- 3/5:: PVD COULD HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB
First of all I think IMO that the GLOBAL CD is better than VOLUME, I like FOR AN ANGEL'09 the JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE,BRITNEY SPEARS and U2 remixes are outright garbage it should not have been there to begin with. The only remix I liked was MARTYR by DEPECHE MODE it was a very good. It is a given that FORBIDDEN FRUIT, TELL ME WHY, NEW YORK CITY, WHITE LIES, ANOTHER WAY and LET'S GO are very good tracks and I like the PVD put them together.
I mean maybe I am asking for a little too much for a greatest hits album but if he remixed FOR AN ANGEL I think that he could have done the same thing with his earlier hits. I am wondering how come songs like CONNECTED, HOURS and Innocence [Paul Van Dyk Remix] - Joker Jam was not included.
I still consider him to be the best TRANCE DJ in the world but I think that he missed the mark on this CD. Also as I stated the GLOBAL CD is a better CD and the mixes are better too.
2009-06-16 -- 2/5:: Disappointing
As a collection of the best of PVD, this album is a bit of a failure. In fact, it isn't really the best of anything in particular, and certainly not Paul Van Dyk. I expected it to contain some of his classics alongside modernizations of older tracks, especially those from his legendary Seven Ways. While "Forbidden Fruit" does make an appearance, it is only the first 13 tracks that are album cuts with the remainder being average or less than average remixes, including a simply dreadful version of U2's ELEVATION.
If you're any sort of PVD fan, you're much better off just buying the albums you don't have and compiling your own 'best of' track list. Then you won't have situations like the paired down NOTHING BUT YOU (original) at just 1:54 stripped of all it's elegant beauty and passion. The version from Reflections is by far the better track, and if this is a 'best of' collection, not including it is farcical. For that matter, where is BUENAVENTURA?
To add insult to injury, the last track features the one-and-only Brittany Spears, which made me want to jam erasers into my ears for the first time since I left preschool. This is a forgettable collection, and I can't see any real reason to buy it except to get a feel for PVD in general if you've not listened to much of his stuff. If on the other hand you are a fan like myself, spend your money to get one of his full length albums (and especially SEVEN WAYS!) you don't own yet.
1.5/5 Stars.
