More Informations: "'Round Midnight" is ...More a 1944 jazz standard by jazz musician Thelonious Monk. It is thought that Monk originally composed it sometime between 1940 and 1941, however Harry Colomby claims that Monk may have written an early version around 1936 (at the age of 19) with the title "Grand Finale". "'Round Midnight" has been recorded with greater frequency than any other standard composed by a jazz musician. Thelonious Sphere Monk (October 10, 1917-February 17, 1982) was an American jazz pianist and composer. Widely considered one of the most important musicians in jazz, Monk had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including "Epistrophy", "'Round Midnight", "Blue Monk", "Straight No Chaser" and "Well, You Needn't". Often regarded as a founder of bebop, Monk's playing style later evolved away from that form. His compositions and improvisations are full of dissonant harmonies and angular melodic twists, and are impossible to separate from Monk's unorthodox approach to the piano, which combined a highly percussive attack with abrupt, dramatic use of silences and hesitations; a style nicknamed "Melodious Thunk" by his wife Nellie. Later life Monk had disappeared from the scene by the mid-1970s ... |

~ 'Round Midnight - Live Performance
Views: 7409 | | | | | This is another song from the performance with the Dave Sterner Quintet at the 36th annual Lakeland Jazz Festival. 'Round Midnight is such an unbelievably fantastic song, that I find the less I play, the better. We have chosen to perform this using the cl ...More assic Miles/Coltrane arrangement. Playing in this setting works me the hardest in two ways; trying my darnedest not to rush, and making sure to leave a lot of tonal space and open air for the soloist. Although the video quality is not that great, the audio portion is in Hi-Fi stereo ;-). Gershwin's compositions spanned both popular and classical genres, and his most popular melodies are universally familiar. He wrote most of his vocal and theatrical works in collaboration with his elder brother, lyricist Ira Gershwin. ~ Miles Davis Quintet - 'Round Midnight - 31 Oct 67 (3 of 4)
Views: 8356 | | | | | Davis' second great quintet, October 31, 1967, Stockholm, Sweden. Complete set. Their music was becoming increasingly complex, abstract and free, as Davis moved closer to his electric "fusion" period. With the rhythm section given a much more central role than Davis ever allowed previously, the group was transforming freebop into something else: hypnotic, unpredictable and poetic. Davis was at a creative pinnacle similar to the height his sextet with John Coltrane and Bill Evans reached in 1959. Note: Starting in '67, the quintet began to play live concerts in continuous sets, each song flowing into the next without pause -- and only melodic and tempo changes indicating transition. Set: Agitation (Miles Davis, from ESP, Nov. '65) Footprints (Wayne Shorter, from MILES SMILES, Jan '67) 'Round Midnight (Thelonious Monk, Cootie Williams, from 'ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT, 18 Mar '57) Gingerbread Boy (Jimmy Heath, from MILES SMILES) The Theme (from 'WORKIN, Sept. Thats the first reaction you might get from a video doing the rounds online. It features actors dressed up as traditional Japanese peasants performing some sort of story to the accompaniment of American jazz standards. Which they sing. With Japanese lyrics. At first glance its just funny. But The Worlds Alex Gallafent digs a little deeper. So a colleague sent me a link to a video. It had been forwarded to him by another friend: you know how it goes. The video is titled: Japanese Jazz Opera. And heres how it begins. Yep, thats Nows The Time, by Charlie Parker. Only in the video its sung by an old peasant couple, with Japanese lyrics. The setting is a kind of studio version of an olden-days Japanese village. They seem to be actors in some ... |
